As we head into the holiday season, everyone is gearing up to celebrate and finalizing their plans. For some of us, the holidays are a time to travel and spend time with friends and family we don’t get to see that often. Others use the holiday season to make merry in other ways. But for almost everyone, it’s a break from daily routine. Sounds great…if you’re a human being, that is.

For dogs, a break in routine can be very stressful. That stress is compounded when a human is taking a trip and leaves his dog behind, whether at a boarding facility or with a friendly dog sitter. If your dog has increased accidents indoors, barks or howls for no apparent reason, increasingly chews on or destroys household objects, or even tries to escape from his home or guardian, he may be suffering from separation anxiety.

Fortunately, CBD oil for dogs can help alleviate the symptoms and get your dog on the road to feeling better.

    What is Separation Anxiety?

Around ten percent of all dogs face separation anxiety at some time in their life, usually during puppy hood or their senior years. A dog is a pack animal who depends on his social connections and the presence of company around him, and you are the most important person in your dog’s life. When dogs are separated from their humans, they find it confusing. They don’t understand why. They don’t understand whether or not the human is coming back. All they want is to be reunited with their “pack”—in this case, you.

Dogs who have previously not been prone to separation anxiety may develop the condition after a change in routine—for example, if someone has been available to spend the day with them every day and then has to take a job. Separation anxiety might also develop after a move to anew house or one of the family members leaving home for some reason. Separation anxiety disproportionately affects dogs who have lived in animal shelters.

    What is CBD Oil?

Of course, before you give your beloved dog any kind of home remedy, you want to know exactly what it is. That’s as it should be—your dog depends on you to do the research for him. Cannabidol—CBD for short—is a compound harvested from the cannabis plant that has been found to have significant medical benefits thanks to the way it reacts with certain receptors in the central nervous system, the immune system, and other places throughout the body.

CannaBiDogin Englewood, CO provides a helpful description of the compound:

CBD is anactive compound (called a cannabinoid) that is found in mature hemp plants. It is a non-psychoactive compound, meaning it doesn’t product any kind of “high” or “buzz”. It is a great natural alternative for many dogs who need long term care but their doggy parents don’t want them to be on a daily pharmaceutical or for those doggies who do not respond to traditional medications.

An important takeaway is that while CBD does come from the cannabis, or hemp, plant, it is not psychoactive, and your dog will not experience any kind of “high” from taking it.

How Does CBD Help with Separation Anxiety?

CBD has shown in scientific studies, to have a significant impact on reducing anxiety. How? By boosting signalling through the serotonin receptors in the brain. Specifically, 5 HT1-A receptors, which are located in highest densities in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala, three areas known to be heavily involved in mood and anxiety disorders. When CBD interacts with a 5HT1-A receptor, it does not bind to the site, but rather interacts only partially—just enough to diminish anxiety and have your dog breathing easily again.

This holiday season, before you jump on a plane, treat your dog to the gift of peace and relaxation with a dose of CBD oil for dogs.
